Bloody Thursday Sculpture

In 1985, Elias ("Dutch") Schultz finished a wood sculpture commemorating the ILWU's 1934 West Coast waterfront strike. The sculpture titled "Bloody Thursday" is on display at Pier 69.

“Bloody Thursday” refers to July 5, 1934 when, during the West Coast waterfront strike, two men, a striker and a strike sympathizer, were shot by police in San Francisco. The International Longshore Workers Union still commemorates Bloody Thursday by closing down ports on West Coast each year on July 5.
